How to Plan a Pre Wedding Shoot in India — A Complete 2026 Guide

A pre-wedding shoot is the trailer to your wedding film — get it right and the wedding markets itself. Done badly, it's an expensive day of forced smiles. Here's the system we've refined over 200+ pre-wedding shoots, broken into the four decisions that matter most: concept, location, budget, and the 30-day prep.

Why a pre-wedding shoot is worth it

Beyond the obvious — invitations, save-the-dates, social posts — a pre-wedding shoot does something quieter but more important: it gives the couple a low-stakes rehearsal of being photographed together. By the time the actual wedding rolls around, the camera-shyness is gone and the chemistry on-frame is real.

Couples who've done a pre-wedding shoot deliver visibly better wedding day portraits. Every. Single. Time.

Step 1: Pick your concept first, location second

This is where most couples get it backwards. They lock a location ("we want Udaipur!") and then try to retrofit a concept onto it. The result is generic.

Start with a feeling instead:

  • Cinematic and moody? Mountain locations, rain or fog, muted outfits.
  • Editorial and clean? Modern architecture, minimal palette, sharp tailoring.
  • Cultural and rooted? Heritage venues, traditional outfits, family-style props.
  • Boho and free? Forest, desert or coast, flowy fabrics, no props.

Once the feeling is locked, the location list narrows itself.

Step 2: The best pre-wedding locations in India (and what they cost)

Within Delhi NCR (single-day shoots)

Location Vibe Permit Best time
Lodhi Garden Editorial, soft Free 6–8 AM
Sunder Nursery Heritage, lush ₹1,000 7–9 AM
Tughlaqabad Fort Moody, raw ASI permit Sunset
Hauz Khas Village Urban, art Free 4–6 PM
Aravalli Biodiversity Park Boho, forest Free Golden hour

4–6 hour drives from Delhi (weekend shoots)

  • Tijara Fort Palace, Alwar — 90 min from Delhi, 14 themed suites, every wall is a frame.
  • Neemrana Fort — 2 hours, royal feel without Rajasthan flights.
  • Rishikesh / Beatles Ashram — 5 hours, river + spiritual + street art.
  • Agra (beyond the Taj) — Mehtab Bagh at sunrise gives you the Taj reflection without crowds.

Destination locations (worth the flights)

  • Udaipur — City Palace at golden hour is the most-booked frame in India for a reason.
  • Manali / Solang — Snow makes outfits pop. December–February.
  • Goa (off-season) — June–September is empty, lush and dramatic.
  • Jaisalmer — Desert, fort, dunes. Plan two nights minimum.
  • Pondicherry — French quarter pastel walls, beach light, unique.

Step 3: Build your pre-wedding shoot budget

For a comfortable mid-tier shoot, allocate budget in this ratio:

  • 40% photographer + cinematographer
  • 25% travel and stay
  • 20% outfits (rented or bought, but factor it)
  • 10% hair and makeup
  • 5% props, permits, food

A typical 2026 breakdown for a 2-day Udaipur shoot looks like:

Item Approx ₹
Photo + cinema team (2 people) 1,40,000
Flights + hotel 60,000
Outfits (2 looks each) 50,000
HMUA on location 25,000
Permits + props + food 15,000
Total 2,90,000

A local NCR pre-wedding done well comes in around ₹65,000–₹85,000. See our current pre-wedding packages for exact inclusions.

Step 4: The 30-day countdown checklist

This is the same prep sheet we send every couple after they book.

30 days before

  • Final concept moodboard (Pinterest board, share with photographer)
  • Outfit shortlist locked (4 outfits across 2 days)
  • Travel and stay booked (if destination)
  • HMUA confirmed for shoot date

14 days before

  • Trial makeup session — both partners
  • Outfit alterations and steaming
  • Skincare in maintenance mode (no new products)
  • Drone permits filed if shooting heritage sites

7 days before

  • Hydrate aggressively — 4 litres a day
  • No haircut for him, no facial for her in this window
  • Confirm shoot timeline with photographer
  • Charge all batteries, format all cards (we do this for you)

Day before

  • Eat a proper dinner, sleep by 10 PM
  • Lay out outfits, accessories, undergarments
  • Pack two pairs of comfortable shoes per person
  • Don't try anything new — no Botox, no facial, no gym PR

Shoot day

  • Eat. Seriously. Hangry couples never look in love.
  • Comfortable clothes for travel between locations
  • Bring snacks and water (we always bring extra)
  • Trust the process — the first hour is always awkward

What we (the photographer) bring on shoot day

For full transparency, here's our standard pre-wedding kit:

  • 2× full-frame mirrorless bodies (Sony A7 IV + Sony FX3)
  • Sigma 35mm, 85mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm
  • Drone (DGCA registered, UIN visible)
  • Off-camera flash + softbox
  • 4× LED panels for indoor / blue hour
  • Backup of every card in real time

If your photographer can't list the same kit, ask why.

Common pre-wedding mistakes

  1. Over-styling the male partner. Most grooms look better in their own clothes than in a sherwani for a beach shoot. Match the location, not the outfit shop.
  2. Filming reels alongside photos. Pick a primary medium. Trying to do both halves the quality of each.
  3. Picking a location 6 hours from your hotel. Travel kills energy. Cluster locations within 30 min radius.
  4. Inviting friends and family to the shoot. Even one extra person changes the dynamic. Two-person shoots are intimate by design.
  5. Forgetting the second outfit lighting. A black outfit at golden hour reads completely different than at noon. Plan outfit-to-light, not outfit-to-location.

What happens after the shoot?

Standard delivery is 45 edited photos and one 60-second cinematic reel within 14 days. Premium tiers add a 3-minute film, 200+ photos, and full RAW backup. Read more about our photography services or jump to the wedding venue guide if you're locking the wedding location next.

Ready to plan? Reach out with your wedding date and we'll send back a tailored pre-wedding proposal within 24 hours.

Local Delhi NCR pre-weddings typically range ₹35,000–₹85,000. Destination shoots in Udaipur, Manali or Goa land between ₹1.2L–₹2.5L all-inclusive. Drone, second camera and same-day reel are usually add-ons.

Most monuments (Qutub, Humayun's Tomb, Mehrangarh) require ASI permits — ₹3,000–₹15,000 depending on the site. Hotels usually ask for a venue fee. Beaches and forests are free in most states but check local rules.
How long does a pre-wedding shoot last?+
A single-day local shoot is 6–8 hours including 2 outfit changes. A two-day destination shoot is 14–16 hours of actual shooting across 3–4 locations.
